Following on from the “Confidence Booster” course with Christi’s Stitches where I made my bunting, I had booked myself on to another course almost immediately, this time “Applique”. I have had a fair amount amount of practise at home but not dared stray from straight stitch and straight lines. Another stunning setting today, especially given the weather, Loggerheads Country Park.
First job was to choose a pattern. There was a large range on offer in Christi’s pattern book including hearts, stars, letters, cupcakes, farm animals and sailing boats. With the owl pattern having gone astray Christi had another drawn in no time.
Choosing fabric was as difficult as ever with a good selection on offer. With fabric chosen, all pieces cut out and interfacing applied the sewing began. I found it a challenge, especially the eyes – one of which I had to unpick and start again. My machine control is not great and it took all my concentration to try and do a neat job, particularly around tight curves. With my owl complete it was a quick job to finish off the envelope fold cushion cover. Once home I added the buttons. I now realise the value of my grandma’s button tin!
I had a lovely time today. I used interfacing for the first time, learning it’s purpose and how to choose the correct weight. I used zigzag stitching for the applique with Christi explaining why it is used and where to place the stitch for the neatest finish and to prevent fraying – the theory of which I understand but will take time to put it into practice effectively. A relaxing, informative morning where no question is trivial or problem too small.
